A source of β-Caryophyllene from black pepper (Piper nigrum L.)

Black pepper berries are known for the presence of the pungent compound piperine. However, it was found that the essential oil of black pepper is rich in a sesquiterpene with extremely interesting properties: (E)-β-caryophyllene.

Recent studies show that (E)-β-caryophyllene significantly reduces the hyperalgesia of the oral cavity, stimulates the production of insulin, reduces the production of proinflammatory cytokines, and reduces the intracellular concentrations of triglycerides.

PipeNig® contains a high concentration of the sesquiterpene (E)-β-caryophyllene. Because of its weak aromatic flavor, (E)-β-caryophyllene is commercially used as a food additive (FDA approved) and in cosmetic products.

Notably, (E)-β-caryophyllene has recently been identified as a natural selective agonist of the peripherally expressed cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2).
